Debby's story

My name is Debby, I first had a early miscarriage in 1998, and then went on to become pregnant again and despite having hyperemisis where I was sick up to 25 times a day to week 32 and giving birth at week 37 having a horrendous labor but giving birth to a baby although jaundiced who is now a healthy 6 year old, nothing could prepare me for what I went through the next time.

I fell pregnant in 2001 and again suffered terrible sickness and was continuously at the hospital for scans and check ups due to a strange, unexplained pain.

Then at 21 weeks I went into labor, they thought this could
be due to an incompetent cervix and although I was fully dilated they put the cervical stitch in, however 4 days later this needed to be removed and I gave birth to a dead baby girl.

Apparently they do not look into things or didnt back then until you have lost three babies.

Well losing one is traumatic enough so I feel checks and
investigations should be done earlier, however I pushed for an investigation and attended the st marys recurrent miscarriage clinic in london where I learnt I have primary antiphospholipid syndrome.

I got pregnant again in 2002 and had to inject myself with heparin daily and take aspirin and also again put up with hideous sickness, but again I had this unexplained pain,
and at 12 weeks had bleeding, the cervical stitch was put in at 12 weeks, and from that point on I was scarred stiff to move incase it ripped open, at 17 weeks I went into labor again, I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance
and had to have the stitch removed without pain relief as there was no time, and also because of being on heparin I wasnt allowed the epidural, I was in labor for a further four days and gave birth again to another dead baby
girl.

Premature labor is something that needs thoroughly investigated at earlier stages rather than waiting for parents to lose many children before something can be done to help prevent it, also still much research is needed into antiphospholipid syndrome as doctors I have spoken to dont really know what it is and it is very difficult having a condition that you know little about.

My husband has ended up having a vasectomy so that we never have to go through such a tragic and upsetting experience for us as a family. It has affected my life in many ways and I am not the same person I use to be,
if there had been more research maybe we would have waited in the hope that there could be something extra done to help us extend our family.

My daughter still talks of her sisters she has lost, to some people they may have been just a miscarriage to me they were a little perfect person that
just needed more time.
